Day Two
Kansas to Colorado!

Newsletter No. 26
September 12, 2022

We made it to Colorado yesterday and we are DEFINITELY not in Kansas anymore.

Started out in Dodge City, Kansas and headed west to Garden City. Rode all the way through from there to Las Animas, Colorado. Passed through Syracuse, Kansas, location of C.K. Shepherd’s much-maligned but apparently mythical Broadway Temperance Hotel. Stopped at the Colorado Border for the obligatory photo op, and continued to Las Animas. It seemed like only seconds before we were in Nepesta, Colorado. Nepesta seems to be more of a state of mind than a town or village, but we stopped and refueled out of the truck in front of a house that, in theory, could have been the house that C.K. Shepherd’s overnight hosts were building when he took shelter from the incessant rain. It was a nice day for us, though!

Here is a little video of some random highlights.

Entering Colorado

Rode 30-some more miles from Nepesta to Pueblo. I had originally contemplated stopping for an afternoon meal at the Riverwalk in Pueblo, but it was Sunday and the area seemed to me to be deserted, so I went right to the hotel. But Willie and Glen doubled-back to check out the Riverwalk while I gave the Red One some much needed TLC for the big ride on unpaved roads on Monday....

Walsenburg and Raton Pass!

If you have not checked it out, I have a live tracking page on Garmin:

Thanks for all the support and encouragement. On to Pueblo tomorrow,

Mark
